NHS England lays out future of digital technology in health education

A new review from NHS England looks at the current state of digital technology and skills in undergraduate and pre-registration health and care education and lays out a series of recommendations. It examines how digital technologies are being used in learning – and the technical and specialist skills required by teaching staff now and in the future.

Innovations such as virtual reality and robotics offer the chance to practice skills outside of clinical settings, while online learning platforms and digital libraries have streamlined the learning process.

Key findings include:

  • Digital technology increases flexibility, accessibility and collaboration but can potentially reduce engagement – and it is not always easy for everyone to access resources equally.
  • Using digital technology to simulate ‘safe’ practice is enriching experiences and developing competencies but risks dehumanising practice.
  • The right systems, support and training need to be in place to make the most of technology – and many people see themselves as digitally ‘self-taught’, which means levels of skills vary.

Tick-borne encephalitis risk: practical advice during vaccine shortage

NaTHNac has released a reminder of practical aspects of tick-borne encephalitis prevention for health professionals and travellers. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a vaccine-preventable viral disease that occurs in some countries of central, eastern, and northern Europe and across Russia to parts of eastern Asia. Tick-bite avoidance measures during outdoor activities should be advised for all, regardless of whether they have received pre-exposure vaccine before travel. TBE vaccine for pre-exposure vaccination is recommended for those visiting affected areas, whose activities put them at increased risk. Vaccine is not currently recommended by Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) for UK residents without plans to travel overseas to TBE risk areas.

There is currently a shortage of TBE vaccine for children (TicoVac junior) in the UK. Where vaccine stock is available, priority for primary TBE vaccination should be given to those whose activities put them at increased risk.
