Travel vaccines: summer 2025 recap for nurses

Abstract
With the summer holiday period coming, it is vital that nurses are up to date with all NHS travel vaccines, ongoing outbreaks and the Green Book. Good working knowledge of the NHS vaccines to prevent hepatitis A, typhoid, poliomyelitis and cholera is essential. Providing health education about food and water choices is also a key element of travel health consultations, as is giving information about current outbreaks. This article provides an overview of the dynamic world of travel health, focusing on what nurses need to know for this year's holiday season so that they are equipped to advise travellers accordingly. Current issues such as Mpox and Oropouche virus disease will also be discussed.
With the summer approaching, general practice nurses will be experiencing greater demand for travel health advice, vaccinations and appointments. As this is such a dynamic specialty, it is vital to be aware of ongoing disease outbreaks and changes in travel health guidance, as well as updates to the key immunisation resource, the Green Book (UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), 2024a). Nurses must also ensure that they recap all the relevant vaccines so that their knowledge and advice remain current.
This article will provide an overview of the NHS travel vaccines, including the following food and water preventable diseases: hepatitis A, typhoid, poliomyelitis and cholera (the vaccine preventable diseases tetanus and diphtheria are outside the scope of this article). The most important travel health advice related to these infections will be outlined. Additionally, this article will discuss new and topical diseases that nurses may be asked about, including Mpox and Oropouche virus disease.
