The Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) study found that people with tighter glycaemic control (HbA1c <42 mmol/mol) had excessive mortality, particularly in those with multiple risk factors or known coronary artery disease, in comparison to those with conventional glucose control (Dluhy and McMahon 2008). Excess mortality during intensive therapies in the ACCORD study was attributed to treatment associated hypoglycaemia (Tsai et al, 2011)..
